Basics of Union Dues
The Basics of Union Dues
Depending on where you live and what is negotiated, you may be obligated to become a union member and pay dues. In the 27 right-to-work states, it is illegal to force team members to join a union, but an employer may agree to deduct union dues when authorized by individual team members who voluntarily join. In the other states, a union may seek to require team members to join the union after 30 days of employment or be fired. Where legal, unions always seek such “union security” or ”forced membership” clauses in their collective bargaining agreements.
What do union dues buy?
Your dues buy the union
many legal rights.
The union has the right to:
- Collect dues from employees.
- Issue fines when employees violate union rules.
- Call for a strike.
- Fine employees who don’t support the strike.
- Spend union dues to support political causes of their choosing.
- Trade employee benefits for other things of their choosing.
- Refuse to process employee complaints or grievances.
- Speak on your behalf, whether you agree with them or not.
The union cannot guarantee a wage increase.
FedEx Freight will negotiate in good faith, but is not legally required to agree to any specific employment terms. None of the four centers that voted to unionize at FedEx Freight obtained wages or benefits beyond those provided to our non-unionized team members.
