NLRB Revokes Union Certification at FedEx Freight Terminal

FedEx Newsroom • October 6, 2017

FedEx Freight, the industry leader in less-than-truckload transportation, and a subsidiary of FedEx Corp (NYSE: FDX), announced that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has issued an order officially revoking the certification of the Teamsters union as the bargaining representative of city and road drivers at the FedEx Freight location in Monmouth Junction, N.J.

This order is a result of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 701 disclaiming interest in representing the FedEx Freight employees in this location. The revocation comes on the heels of FedEx Freight drivers in Croydon, Pa., and Charlotte, N.C., voting the union out.

To date, at three of the four FedEx Freight locations that originally voted for Teamster representation, the Union has either been decertified by employee vote or voluntarily decided not to continue as bargaining representative.

“Our thriving and open work environment provides a flexible, team-oriented and customer-focused work model, and our people-service-profit philosophy remains at the core of our success and forms the foundation of the unparalleled service that FedEx delivers daily to our customers worldwide,” said Michael L. Ducker, president and CEO of FedEx Freight.

FedEx Freight drivers in Pennsylvania de-certify Teamsters as bargaining agent

DC Velocity • July 20, 2017

Drivers at FedEx Freight’s facility in Croydon, Pa., east of Philadelphia, voted yesterday to de-certify the Teamsters union as their bargaining representative, the second time in less than two weeks that unionized workers at a location of FedEx Corp.’s less-than-truckload (LTL) unit have voted out the Teamsters.

The vote by approximately 45 FedEx Freight city and over-the-road drivers came about two and a half years after workers voted to be represented by Teamsters Local 107, the first group of FedEx Freight workers to do so. A FedEx spokeswoman declined to disclose the voting margin.

On July 7, about 200 unionized FedEx Freight drivers in Charlotte voted to decertify the Teamsters union as their bargaining unit.

“Our drivers recognize that we are a stronger, more cohesive company without a union,” said Michael Gee, service center manager in Croydon, in a statement. http://about.van.fedex.com/newsroom/global-english/fedex-freight-drivers-reject-teamsters-pennsylvania/

Of FedEx’s three business units, only pilots at its FedEx Express air and international unit are unionized. FedEx’s ground delivery unit is non-union, and its drivers are independent contractors. There have been several unsuccessful efforts to organize at FedEx Freight. Memphis-based FedEx has long opposed the presence of third-party bargaining units, saying its business model renders them irrelevant.

Of the 16 petitions that were filed to represent workers at FedEx Freight, the Teamsters either lost or withdrew 12 of them. Besides Croydon and Charlotte, workers in South Brunswick, N.J., and Stockton, Calif., have voted for union representation.

The company and the union have been engaged for nearly a year in negotiating a collective-bargaining agreement.

FedEx Freight workers in Charlotte vote union out

Commercial Appeal • July 10, 2017

FedEx Freight workers in Charlotte, North Carolina have reversed course and voted not to unionize.

City and road drivers at a FedEx Freight service center voted last week to decertify the International Brotherhood of Teamsters as their bargaining representatiive.

The Charlotte terminal was one of the union’s wins during a hotly contested organizing campaign in 2014.

A statement from FedEx spokesman Jim McCluskey about the Charlotte vote said in part: “We are pleased with these results and continue to believe that our thriving, competitive work environment provides a more flexible, team-oriented, and customer-focused work model than the union can offer.”

McCluskey said city and road drivers at the FedEx Freight service center in Croydon, Pennsylvania recently filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) seeking to decertify the Teamsters union as their bargaining representative. The vote is scheduled for July 19.

Pilots are FedEx’s only major domestic work group covered by a collective bargaining agreement, although the Teamsters have waged a protracted battle to unionize workers in other operating units.

The effort to organize FedEx Freight centers one at a time has yet to produce a labor contract at any of the centers that supported the Teamsters.

“We have no collective bargaining agreements at any FedEx Freight location,” said FedEx Freight communications director Michele Ehrhart.

A Facebook page, Bring the Teamsters to FedEx Freight, said the Teamsters began negotiating with FedEx Freight last June, after a series of delays, for a contract covering workers at an East Philadelphia terminal.

FedEx Freight drivers vote to decertify union

Memphis Business Journal • July 10, 2017

A group of FedEx workers has decided to say goodbye to its union.

FedEx announced that city and road drivers at a FedEx Freight service center in Charlotte voted to “decertify the Teamsters union as its bargaining representative.”

“FedEx Freight respects the right of our team members to decide for themselves if they want to be part of a union. We are pleased with these results and continue to believe that our thriving, competitive work environment provides a more flexible, team-oriented, and customer-focused work model than the union can offer,” the shipping giant stated in a release.

Road drivers from a FedEx Freight service center in Croydon, Pennsylvania, have also filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to decertify themselves from the Teamsters union. In 2014, this group voted in favor of union representation. A decertification election date for the Croydon road drivers is scheduled for July 19.

FedEx Freight is under the umbrella of Memphis-based FedEx Corp. FedEx was founded in 1973 and today serves more than 220 countries and territories across the world. The logistics giant has more than 400,000 employees.
